In 2022, I wrapped up a five-year tenure at Chalkbeat, the nonprofit news organization covering public education — and now also election administration with their sister publication Votebeat.

I served as executive editor, editor-in-chief, and publisher over the course of my time there, leading the newsroom and then setting up structures and practices across the entire organization to establish a multi-vertical operation, now known as Civic News Company

More about me

I’ve tackled just about every facet and format of journalism and media, from enterprise, breaking news, service journalism, and instructional content to nonprofits and community engagement —  across film, video, radio, print, and digital. I’m a systems thinker with a creative streak (or a creative with a passion for systemic analysis), and I’ve never believed in the left brain-right brain dichotomy.

I began my career in film production in Rome, Italy before moving into journalism. My reporting started at the Vatican, and I continued my focus on religion after I moved back to the U.S., covering topics as varied as sermons for the Jewish High Holy Days, hip-hop masses, the spiritual wounds of war, and theologian Reinhold Niebuhr’s influence on politicians. (I have a personal interest in religion, too.)

About a decade into my journalism career, I decided to expand my horizons and worked with several digital startups, including the how-to video company Howcast, the beauty subscription trailblazer Birchbox, and the women’s workwear company MM.LaFleur. My time in startups taught me about launching products, scaling organizations, managing operations, and driving revenue — experiences that enriched my work back in journalism when I returned. You can read more about my experience at my LinkedIn

I graduated from Princeton University, was a Fulbright Scholar in Italy, and in 2021 was a Sulzberger Executive Leadership Fellow at the Columbia University School of Journalism. I’m a member of the National Advisory Council of the Emma Bowen Foundation, the Editorial Board of the Princeton Alumni Weekly, and the Advisory Board of Entertainment 2 Affect Change. I live in New York, where I spend most of my free time cooking, eating, and talking about cooking and eating. Cooking blends art and science in the same way I approach my work (it also requires lots of list-making, one of my great passions!), and food can teach us about culture and history. Food also connects us across place, time, and people.

My values:

Wisdom Humility

Generosity Community

Adventure Accountability
