In 2022, I wrapped up a five-year tenure at Chalkbeat, the nonprofit news organization covering public education — and now also election administration with their sister publication Votebeat. I served as executive editor, editor-in-chief, and publisher over the course of my time there, leading the newsroom and then setting up structures and practices across the entire organization to help them achieve their ambitious goals.
ABOUT ME
INTRODUCE YOUR BRAND
I started my career in film production in Rome, Italy before moving into journalism, and I’ve tackled just about every facet and format of journalism and media, from enterprise, breaking news, service journalism, and instructional content to nonprofits and community engagement — across film, video, radio, print, and digital. My reporting started at the Vatican, and I continued my focus on religion after I moved back to the U.S., covering topics as varied as sermons for the Jewish High Holy Days, hip-hop masses, the spiritual wounds of war, and theologian Reinhold Niebuhr’s influence on politicians.
About a decade into my journalism career, I decided to expand my horizons and worked with several digital startups, including the how-to video company Howcast, the beauty subscription trailblazer Birchbox, and the women’s workwear company MM.LaFleur. My time in startups taught me about launching products, scaling organizations, managing operations, and driving revenue — experiences that enriched my work back in journalism when I returned. You can read more about my experience at my LinkedIn.
I graduated from Princeton University, was a Fulbright Scholar in Italy, and in 2021 was a Sulzberger Executive Leadership Fellow at the Columbia University School of Journalism. I am a member of the National Advisory Council of the Emma Bowen Foundation, the Editorial Board of the Princeton Alumni Weeklydu/, and the Advisory Board of Entertainment 2 Affect Change. I live in New York, where I spend most of my free time cooking, eating, and talking about cooking and eating.
